How do you find the perfect sofa to complement your room? Here are some general interior design tips to help you make your mind up.

• Light coloured walls mean that you can use bolder colours for furniture to make an individual statement.

• Vibrant colours on walls can overpower furniture and make a room feel smaller – better to use lighter tones and perhaps one or 2 walls in a strong colour to provide a backdrop for a special piece of furniture.

• Look at paint charts or magazines for inspiration – they can be a good guide to choosing a colour scheme for the whole room, not just the walls. They will often bring together a harmonious group of colours which you can use to plan your furniture and other room accessories.

• The material you choose for your furniture also makes a design statement. For a touch of luxury use plush velvets and chenilles. For a more utilitarian and functional feel, try cottons and other natural fibres for your fabric sofa..

• Cushions can add softness and are an easy way to introduce another colour to the palette. Patterned cushions are popular and can brighten up a room.

• A leather sofa can either give a very traditional or very contemporary feel depending on the design of the sofa. Generally brown or lighter colour leather will go with most décor, but black leather tends to fit with ultra modern, minimalist interiors.

• Choose a high-backed sofa good for extra back support.

• Two 2-seater sofas may suit a smaller room better than one 3-seater and armchair and offer more flexibility.

• Good quality leather generally ages well and looks even better as it gets older.

  Measure your room carefully.
  It is a good idea to measure your old sofa as this will give you a good idea of scale.

• Measure your doorways to make sure the sofa will fit through.
  If you have a wooden floor, it is a good idea to put down an old sheet or piece of carpet at the entrance of the room to avoid any scratches as you bring it through the door and move it into position.
