The Barcelona sofa was originally designed for the German Pavilion
at the International Exhibition by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe.
Mies Van Der Rohe was born in 1886 and was the third and last director
of the the influential Bauhaus School of Art and Design until it
was closed by the Nazis in 1933. He also organised the 1927 Werkbund
Exposition in Stuttgart which featured leading lights like Le Corbusier
and Gropius.
